Nick Davis was born in New York City in 1965, the son of a documentary filmmaker (Peter Davis) and a writer (Johanna Mankiewicz). He attended the Collegiate School in New York City and Harvard College. At Harvard, he was one of the founding members of the improv group, On Thin Ice. He graduated in 1987. He wrote, with Brooks Hansen, the novel Boone, which was published in 1990 and named one of the notable books of the year by the New York Times. Davis wrote and performed with the improv groups Gotham City Improv and You And What Army before starting his career in film on Ken Burns' Baseball. He lives in New York City with his wife, novelist Jane Mendelsohn, and their two daughters.
